Miike makes so many films that inevitably the quality varies greatly. I adore 13 Assassins for example, but the recent Yakuza Apocalypse was, in my opinion, dreadful. This film is a little like Audition in the sense that there is a slow build up to some very disturbing images. The cross-over between a theatre production and the actors in reality is handled expertly and very nicely shot. It's slow burn and ordinary horror fans will probably lose interest but I am interested in Japanese culture and Samurai flicks and found the concept very interesting. Eventually reality starts mirroring the play and vice versa until the audience is unsure what is meant to be real. There are some shock moments, classic Miike cruelty and gore but most effective is that some sense of creepiness that he achieved with Audition. It's very well acted and staged and worth a watch if you have the patience and like your films genuinely creepy and visceral.
