Julie London's recording career was a mixed bag. She started out as a sultry cool Jazz pop singer, but after subsequent albums saw a drop in sales her record company pushed her in a more middle of the road lush Pop with strings direction. Even then, though, she'd put out a great Jazz album like Julie... at Home, and prove that she still had that cool Jazzy attitude. After much of the 60's was spent in that overproduced, sappy, string loaded vein, Julie came storming back with this gem from 1967.Gone were the strings and sappy pop music, and back was the sultry sound. But there was a new addition to the mix - some Rock and Soul stylings. As a result, With Body & Soul ends up being a Big Band Jazz album with some really soulful, sultry sounds. It's a brilliant combination, and Julie's voice sounds amazingly good singing it. I just wish she had done another half dozen albums like this one.So good, so good.
