What the plot descriptions of this book miss is how extremely funny this book is. I read it when it first came out and the title then struck me as brilliant, because it reframes how we normally see who we are and think about our life story. Then too the author is boldly—and it turns out humorously, recognizes and builds upon how the body runs away with many of us and takes the lead in during certain times, irrationally often to good effect. Yet even as this is about sexual desire and expression, “the body” is nevertheless taking these characters into realms of needed insight and growth. Stylistically too, if you enjoyed Tom Jones, a great picaresque novel or its film version with the incandescent Albert Finney, you might also enjoy the humor and light andpace of this particular trip too. Other overwhelming challenges are crowding in, yet sexuality, “the life of the body”, is somehow threading the needle through all of them. Irrational, humorous, and out of control, I enjoyed this skillfully described trip of a man’s life.
