This book is a collection of sociological essays on fashion theory. Calefato’s basic premise is that the clothes we wear are a way we communicate with the world. Each chapter stands alone pretty well, so if one section doesn’t interest you, you can skip it. Personally, Chapter 4 (Taste Between Common Sense and Received Meaning) completely lost me, but I loved Chapter 5 (Everyday Models). The book was originally published in Italian, so as an added bonus I learned a little bit more about Italian culture. In some of the chapters, something strange is going on with the footnotes. Sometimes they don’t appear to line up, or there are numbers with no notes attached. This is only a minor annoyance and doesn’t really interfere with comprehensibility.
